Why Is Finding a Flattering Dress So Difficult After 65?
Finding a beautiful dress shouldn't mean compromising on comfort. We explore why relaxed silhouettes, gentle tummy coverage and thoughtful little details can make all the difference to dressing elegantly after 65.
I think most of us know the feeling. You spot a lovely dress. The colour is beautiful, the length seems just right, and you can already imagine wearing it to lunch with friends or a family celebration.
Then you try it on.
It's lovely across the shoulders, but a little too fitted through the middle. Or it looks wonderful while you're standing, yet the moment you sit down, the fabric begins to pull.
And suddenly, instead of thinking about where you'll wear it, you're wondering whether you'll feel comfortable in it.
As a fashion writer, I've become increasingly interested in the difference between a dress that simply looks attractive and one that actually feels good to wear.
Because surely, by this stage of life, we shouldn't have to choose between the two.
"A beautiful dress should make you forget about what you're wearing, not spend the day adjusting it."

THE EVERYDAY DILEMMAOur bodies change, but our love of beautiful clothes doesn't
There's nothing unusual about our bodies changing over the years.
Our waists may not be quite as defined as they once were, and many of us find that we prefer a little more room around the tummy and hips.
But that doesn't mean we suddenly want to spend our days in shapeless clothing.
We still want beautiful dresses. We still enjoy getting ready for lunch with friends, family celebrations and those lovely afternoons when there's nowhere in particular we need to be.
We simply want clothes that work with us.
For me, that often means looking for a dress with a softer waistline, a little movement in the fabric and a shape that falls gently rather than hugging the body too closely.
Sometimes those small details make the biggest difference.
A CLOSER LOOKA dress that understands the importance of comfort
While looking at different styles for the warmer months, I recently came across the Georgina Midi Dress.
What caught my eye wasn't an extravagant design or an unusual fashion trend.
It was something much simpler.
The dress has a softly defined waistline, gentle front pleats and a relaxed A-line silhouette that gives the fabric room to fall naturally around the body.
Rather than drawing attention to the tummy, the shape creates an elegant, flowing look.
And I particularly like that it doesn't rely on a tight, restrictive waist to create its silhouette.
The rounded neckline is simple and timeless, while the mid-calf length offers that lovely balance between feeling covered and looking feminine.
It's the kind of design that makes me appreciate how much thoughtful tailoring can change the way a dress feels.
THE LITTLE DETAILSFive things I appreciate about Georgina
1. A relaxed shape around the tummy
The gentle A-line silhouette and soft front pleats allow the fabric to fall comfortably through the middle, without a tightly fitted waist.
2. A lovely mid-calf length
Long enough to feel comfortable when sitting down, while still looking elegant with sandals or simple flats.
3. Lightweight, breathable fabric
The material is designed to feel soft and comfortable, with a little stretch that allows easier movement throughout the day.
4. Practical hidden pockets
There's something rather satisfying about finding a lovely dress that also has pockets. Perfect for keeping a tissue or other little essentials close by.
5. A timeless, feminine look
A rounded neckline, gentle pleats and relaxed silhouette create a style that doesn't depend on fast-changing fashion trends.
I think there's something rather lovely about finding clothes that suit the person we are today.
We don't need to dress the way we did at 35, and we certainly don't need to follow every new fashion trend.
But we also don't need to give up on beautiful dresses simply because our bodies have changed.
We can still love colour, elegance, lovely fabrics and thoughtful details.
We can still enjoy getting dressed for a special occasion.
And most importantly, we can choose clothes that make us feel comfortable and confident, exactly as we are.
That's what I appreciate about designs like Georgina.
Sometimes the loveliest things are also the simplest.
Warmly,
